You're not the problem. You're the solution.
Once upon a time, I trained to become a systemic coach...
In today’s installment of The Bloom, I’m sharing one of the most significant experiences from my coaching training. It was simple, yet incredibly powerful.
One of the most enlightening experiences occurred during a weekend module at the Coaching Akademie Berlin. We had a new lecturer who initiated the session with a brief introduction round, prompting us to share our current feelings. For some reason, I felt unusually nervous, with my heart beating faster than expected for a simple introductory round. Taking a deep breath, I shared with the group that I was feeling anxious about the day, emphasizing a recent struggle.
To my surprise, the lecturer took the time to ask questions and held a mini coaching session with me right then and there.
“What might appear as a weakness can also be a powerful resource.”
What does that mean?
In systemic coaching a system aims to either stabilize or further develop. Therefore, the overall intention behind your behaviors and reactions is to achieve something "good."
Your own interpretations of a situation can sometimes turn your behavior into a problem. Recognizing that there may be deeper reasons behind your actions in the moment can offer a sense of relief.
What I had defined as a weakness, something holding me back, was put into perspective by our lecturer. He asked me why I might be reacting this way and what good it might do. I realized that, in fact, I was trying to protect myself. Although my initial instinct was to believe I was holding myself back, I was, in reality, attempting to watch out for myself.
Problems are solutions.
Understanding your alleged problem will provide answers that lead to solutions.
Now, as I witness individuals, including myself, facing challenges, I have adopted a habit of probing deeper into the root causes. This shift in perspective has not only made me more mindful of my own actions but has also fostered a compassionate understanding for others. By recognizing that what may initially appear as a weakness could, in fact, be a powerful resource, we open ourselves to transformative possibilities within the systemic coaching framework.
